[ISEA2015] Artists Talk: Pirkka Åman, Lukas Kuehne, Ava Grayson & Karina Jensen — Passio Musicae Open Source: Interactive Sonification of the Sibelius Monument

Artists Statement

Sibelius monument is one of the most visited sights in Finland. By creating an invisible, interactive version of the monument, we wanted to honor the 150th anniversary of the Finnish national composer and the work of sculptor Eila Hiltunen who created the monument that was inaugu-rated in 1967. By using the physical dimensions of over 500 steel tubes that form the original work as sound sources, we created a sound installation wherein the muse-um visitors can create a soundscape real-time by moving in the space. By moving around inside the virtual version of the monument, the visitors trigger the sounds tube by tube, thus creating a unique interactive soundscape. The work was on exhibit at Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki, from January to May 2015.
