[ISEA2015] Artist Talk: Maria Papadomanolaki — A certain geography: disrupting site-specific sound through networked performance

Artist Statement

A certain geography is a site-specific networked performance and is a continuation of a series of projects I have created since 2007 dealing with site-specificity, soundwalking, listening and the use of live mobile sound transmission. For this project I work extensively for a short period of time with the environs of a specific site in order to choose the path for a soundwalk, which also leads to the creation of a locative text-score to be used in the performance. The performance consists of myself transmitting live my soundwalk back to the chosen site where the audience is located listening to the live sound while watching/reading the projected text-score. The transmission loop closes with the audience participating in the exploration by sending messages to my, responding to the experience, instigating me to take actions. The performance concludes when I enter the site where the audience is located.

I would like to re-enact the transmission environment of my ongoing project entitled A certain geography. By doing a 10 minute remote soundwalk-presentation, I would like to stream live the sounds of my locality in London and by using my voice I would like to describe the nuances of my project. The presentation can involve, if possible, interaction with the audience via text messaging and twitter. A text-based video will be simultaneously screened to provide hints and support the live streamed sound as well as used as a prompt for audience participation. voicesoundtext.com/a-certain-geography
