Panel: Gender and Technology

One of the enduring mysteries of life is the other washroom. Public lavatories remain a bastion of segregation as well as a haven of modesty. They have recently become a battleground for gender equality over the issue of annoyingly one-sided queues. A charged nexus of privacy and parity, rest rooms provide a suitable sanctuary from which to contemplate social issues facing a tele­computed world. What are the demands of equality, access and opportunity in a virtual universe whose activities are the antithesis of bodily functions?

  • Timothy Binkley (USA) is Chair of the Graduate Program in Computer Art at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He also directs the Institute for Computers in the Arts. He is the author of two books, Wittgenstein’s Language and Symmetry Studio, as well as numerous articles on aesthetics. He has created software for artists and has designed a number of interactive installations.
