[ISEA2013] Artists Statement: Stephen Jones & Pia van Gelder — Tetra Synth

Artists Statement

Stephen Jones & Pia van Gelder created a huge video synthesiser, to manipulate (analogue) video.

“The Tetra Vision Synth (TVS) or Tetrasynth is an analogue modular video synthesiser made in the shape of a tetrahedron. The electronics have been built using original schematics designed by Stephen Jones in 1996. The synthesiser is composed of a total of 12 modules made up of three distinct designs: the VCO module or video oscillator, the effects module, and a patching and viewing module. Each of the identical three faces of the TVS contribute to the red green and blue analogue outputs which appear on the final display. Unlike the traditional rectangular modular synthesis designs, the three faces of the TVS stand at an axis, inviting participants to engage in synthesis in a collaborative and relational manner.” piavangelder.com/tetrasynth

  • Dr. Stephen Jones  “is a Sydney-based video artist of long standing”. He was “originally trained in Systems Theory at the Australian National University (ANU) and his work uses the systems approach as its basis. He is an experienced electronic engineer having developed equipment ranging from analogue video synthesizers to DVD synchronizers, and builds interactive installation devices for artists.” filter.org.au/issue-79/feedback-is-the-ultimate-karma-data-flow-and-the-closing-of-the-loop
  • Pia van Gelder “is an electronic artist, researcher and historian. Her art practice and scholarship investigates historical and contemporary conceptions of energy and how these shape our relationship with technology, bodies and our environment.” piavangelder.com/info
