This panel will explore university programs in Canada that integrate artistic-based and science/ engineering-based approaches in holistic ways.

  • Joanna Berzowska, Associate Professor and Chair, Concordia University, CA. Joanna Berzowska is the founder and research director of XS Labs, a design research studio with a focus on innovation in the fields of electronic textiles and reactive garments that can enable computationally-mediated interactions with the environment and the individual. A core component of her research involves the development of enabling methods, materials, and technologies – in the form of soft electronic circuits and composite fibers – as well as the exploration of the expressive potential of soft reactive structures.

  • Marek Hatala.  Dr. Marek Hatala is a Professor and Director of the School Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, CA. He received his PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the Technical University in Kosice (Slovakia). His research is driven by the problems arising between the computing systems and their users.

  • Mark-David Hosale, Associate Professor, York University, CA. Mark-David Hosale is a media artist and composer who holds a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Technology from the University of California, Santa Barbara an MM in Music-Composition and Theory from UIUC, and a BA in Music Composition from the College of Creative Studies, at U.C. Santa Barbara. He is an Assistant Professor in Digital Media in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance, and Design, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
