[ISEA2010] Artist Statement: Martin John Callanan – A Planetary Order (Terrestrial Cloud Globe)

Artist Statement

Sculpture 2009

Sculpture A Planetary Order is a terrestrial globe showing clouds from one single moment in time: precisely 0600 UTC on 2 February 2009. It is a physical visualisation of real-time scientific data. The shimmering white cloud globe freeze-frames the entire operation of the global atmospheric regime, and subtly highlights how fragile the environmental (and informational) systems are.

  • Martin John Callanan (UK) is an artist exploring notions of citizenship within the globally connected world. Information, data and knowledge are primary concerns. His work spans numerous mediums and engages both emerging and commonplace technology. Examples include the translation of active communication data into music, and the freezing in time of the earth’s water system. Callanan is currently a Teaching Fellow at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, as well as Junior Editor at Leonardo Electronic Almanac.
