Poster Statement

Broadcast (29 pilgrims,29 tales) was initially produced for the Tate Modern (London), as a one day event on September 11th 1999, a web cast, a permanent archive website and now as a video installation. Twenty nine modern day pilgrims were invited to undertake a 24hr pilgrimage of their own choice, some going to local destinations, others travelling as far as Southern France. Each recited a personal ‘tale’ en route via mobile phone to the artists and a live audience in Borough Market (the site of Chaucer’s Tabard Inn, from the famous medieval text The Canterbury Tales) in an environment which referenced live TV Each of these tales was developed over the previous months in collaboration with the artists, and was illustrated by a contextual prologue and visual material donated by each pilgrim.

• Nina Pope & Karen Guthrie (UK) met while studying at Edinburgh College of Art and have collaborated as artists and film-makers since 1995. Their work deals with histories and futures, real and imagined, often using improvisational and social tools to generate and distribute their ideas.
