Artists Statement

LIVERPOOL CITY CENTRE

Cosmopolitan’ is a complex and thought-provoking work which examines on a personal level the shift in East/West relations since the end of the Cold War. The project consists of a truck container which is animated at dusk by a video projection showing dating agency interviews with hundreds of women from the former Soviet Union seeking husbands in the West. This new meeting of the ‘free’ market and social conservatism promises to trade off the different hopes of the men and women taking part. The work raises issues of migration, trade and gender equality, questioning the extent to which our freedom of personal choice is linked to our geographic position and economic stability.
