[ISEA98] Artist Statement: NIGEL HELYER – SHIP TO SHORE

Artist Statement

ALBERT DOCK, Liverpool & Radio

Nigel Helyer has established a reputation for his innovative work in sound and radio broadcast and this piece demonstrates the power of the sonic to trace historical resonances. ‘Ship to Shore’ examines the diverse and extensive history of Liverpool as a port. Helyer sees the history of shipping as a two tier process – that of commerce and also of the individual experiences of the sailors and dockers who have worked in Liverpool. Using radio broadcasts at midday and midnight along with soundscapes and broadcasts playing continuously from a buoy in the docks, Helyer will contrast and trace the strong links between import and export and the stock exchange relating to the shipping industry against the experiences of dockers and sailors which are rarely documented.
