[ISEA97] Artist Statement: Pete Stollery — Onset/Offset

Artist Statement

My previous tape piece, Altered Images, was concerned with the dual interpretation of the word “image” on both aesthetic and sonic levels. Onset/Offset is concerned, even more than before, with exploiting the interplay between the original “meaning” of sound objects and their spectro-morphological characteristics. Thus, there are many recognisable sounds in this piece which can, and should, be perceived on both levels—the sound of a key in a lock is on one level refers to the action of unlocking a door, but on another, is also interesting as a pure sound in itself. Onset/Offset was realized in the Electroacoustic Music Studios at Northern College, Aberdeen and at the University of Birmingham in April 1996. It received an Honourable Mention in the Stockholm Electronic Arts Award, 1996.

  • Pete Stollery (UK), born Halifax, 1960, studied electroacoustic composition with Jonty Harrison at Birmingham University, where he received his doctorate in 1996. He now composes almost exclusively in the electroacoustic medium, particularly acousmatic music where there exists an interplay between the original”meaning” of sounds and sounds existing purely as sound, divorced from their physical origins. Recent performances include Musica Nova, Prague (1994), International Computer Music Conference (1995, 1996, 1997), Spitalfields Festival, London (1995),Journees d’Informatique Musicale, Paris (1995), ARTWORKS, Texas (1995), Brazilian Computer Music Symposium (1995, 1996, 1997), Florida Festival of Electroacoustic Music (1995, 1996), Musica Verticale, Rome (1995), Sao Paulo Bienal Internacional de MOsica Eletroacustica (1996), the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA96)  and many others. A number of works are available on CD. Shortstuff (tape alone) was awarded Special Prize in the Musica Nova 1994 competition, and Onset/Offset (tape alone) was given an Honourable Mention at the Stockholm Electronic Arts Award, 1996. Altered Images (tape alone) won second prize at C1MESP ’97 (Concurso Internacional de Musica Eletroacustica de Sao Paulo). He is currently Lecturer in Music and Director of the Electroacoustic Music Studio at Northern College, Aberdeen, where he is able to guide school children, student teachers and existing teachers in the creative use of technology in music education. homepages.abdn.ac.uk/wae006/petestollery.com/en
