Artist Statement

Gambiologia is a Brazilian creative hub which adopts the country’s tradition of “gambiarra” (“life hacks” or hechizos) as a source of inspiration for works on art and technology. It materializes itself on the production of multifunctional devices which are recognized either as electronics, installations, sculptures or decorative objects. In this workshop, we will collect unused objects from urban landscape and hack them in order to create upcycled design objects. For that, we will explore the concept of “industrial coincidence”, in which two industrial objects with distinct origins fit perfect in each other. We will also provide basic electronics theory and materials that will be applied in the student’s creations.

• Fred Paulino, Gambiologia/CabraLabm, Brazil. Nació en Belo Horizonte, Brasil, donde vive y trabaja. Actúa desde la década de los 1990 como artista, diseñador, curador e investigador en arte y tecnología. Coordinó y actuó en proyectos relevantes en el área creativa brasileña, como el Estudio Mosquito, Osso Design y Graffiti Research Lab Brasil. Entre 2008 y 2015 coordinó el colectivo Gambiologia, premiado con mención honrosa en el Prix Ars Electronica 2011 (Austria). Fue idealizador y curador de las exposiciones “Gambiólogos – a Gambiarra en los Tiempos del Digital” (2010/2014). Es editor de la “Facta – Revista de Gambiologia”. Actualmente es consultor en programas de arte, tecnología y educación y trabaja en la concepción del taller-productora CabraLab. gambiologia.net
