[ISEA2015] Artist Talk: Jaden Hastings — Echoes of Alakiwohoch

Artist Statement

Keywords: Astronomy, Audio Art, Installation, Interactive, Sculpture

As a meteor passes through the upper atmosphere, it produces an ionization trail that reflects radio waves. This reflection can be detected using a standard FM radio receiver with the aid of an antenna. By capturing the trace of meteors falling toward the Earth, the interactive sculpture Echos of Alakiwohoch reminds us of our celestial origins and the mutability of life our natal planet.

  • Jaden J.A. Hastings‘ work focuses upon the intersection and interplay of art and science – from philosophy to praxis – merging scientific and artistic research. As an alumna of New York University, Harvard University and the University of Oxford (New College) with advanced degrees in both Biology and Bioinformatics, respectively, Ms. Hastings’ career in biomedical research spans over a decade. In 2014, J.J. completed the MA (Fine Art) in Art & Science at Central Saint Martins in London, graduating with Distinction. In 2015, she was selected to be an artist-in-residence for The Story of Light Festival in Goa, the Khoj International Artists’ Association in Delhi, and SymbioticA in Perth. Through her practice, J.J. continues to develop new ways to translate academic laboratory methods into outcomes that challenge the normative views of science and art as discrete disciplines, moving them into new spaces for exploration. jadenhastings.com
