Artist Statement

Video (2015)

In Vehicles, Matthew Schoen imagines a large retro-futuristic machine. An organized structure of beams, wires, pistons and gears is slowly revealed from its smallest components to its larger and more complex mechanisms. This video work takes inspiration from the Braitenberg Vehicles created by Italian-Austrian cyberneticist Valentino Braitenberg as thought experiments that can autonomously move based on sensor inputs.

• The work of Montreal, Canada, artist Matthew Schoen extends towards various media such as video, installation, and electroacoustic music. His work has been showcased in various festivals such as the New York City Electroacoustic Festival, the San Francisco Tape Music Festival and AKOUSMA. Schoen has previously collaborated with dance and theatre productions and is a founding member of Montreal’s Soundwich concert series, promoting young talent in experimental music.
