Panel Statement

This session will bring together representatives of leading art and technology centers. Are this centers like minded in their support for art and technology? What are their specificities, their missions?

• Pierre Bongiovanni, France. As the managing director of the Centre de creation video de Montbeliard, he was instrumental in developing a multimedia production department to which artists-in-residence, numerous creators, scientists and philosophers from all over the world have contributed. He also curated the Montbeliard Video Festival for many years.
• Otto Piene [died 2014] was the first fellow of MIT’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) and its Director from 1974 until his retirement in 1994.
• Luc Courchesne, Canada. Born 1952, St-Leonard d’Aston, Quebec. He studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax (Bachelor of Design in Communication, 1974), and at MIT, Cambridge (Master of Science in Visual Studies, 1984). He began his explorations in interactive video in 1984 when he co-authored Elastic Movies, one of the earliest experiement in the field with Ellen Sebring, Benjamin Bergery, Bill Seaman and others. He has since produced several installations including Encyclopedia Chiaroscuro (1987), Portrait One (1990), Family Portrait (1993) and Salon of Shadows (1995). He is a professor at the Ecole de design industriel, Universite de Montreal, and currently artist in residence at the Zentrum fur Kunst and Medientechnologie (ZKM), Karlsruhe.
