[ISEA2010] Artist Statement: Işıl Eğrikavuk — The Interview

Artist Statement

Video installation. The video at the heart of the project shows a news anchor in St. Louis interviewing the doctor and researcher, Mr. Abdul Nabi, regarding his research on avian influenza, the war in Iraq, and his recent relocation to the United States. The scenes are cut with artist Işıl Eğrikavuk preparing Abdul Nabi for the interview. The answers are revealed to be a scripted narrative, the line between fact and fiction begins to blur.

  • Işıl Eğrikavuk (TK), 1980, lives and works in Istanbul, Turkey. She studied literature at Boğaziçi University (Istanbul) then went to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for her MFA in Performance Art. She moved back to Istanbul in 2008 where she is currently teaching performance and video art at Bilgi University. Eğrikavuk is also a reporter for a Turkish daily newspaper, where she covers stories on the convergence of of culture and politics. Recent exhibitions: the 11th Istanbul Biennial; Moment of Agency, KunstMuseum, Bern/Basel; Wight Biennial, CalArts Wight Gallery, California; and Site Unseen, Chicago Cultural Center.
