Panel: Intermedia Art in the Digital Age

The author discusses her work designing and creating a computer based musical instrument system, called Intuitive Ocusonics, with which a performer creates sound using live eye movements. The translation of different modalities central to the instrument design involve making connections between the temporal act of listening and the temporal act of seeing (active vision).

  • Andrea Polli, USA, is a digital media artist living in New York City. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Time Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently an Associate Professor of Film and Media at Hunter College. She has exhibited and lectured nationally and internationally. In 2001, Polli presented her performance work, Intuitive Ocusonics, a system for performing using eye movements, at V2 in Rotterdam, Holland; at SIGGRAPH ’01 in Los Angeles, CA; at the Subtle Technologies Conference at the University of Toronto, Canada; and at Immedia, at the University of Michigan.
